Absheron ecosystem: sea, wind, salty air 2026
Absheron peninsula is, together with Baku, Europe's easternmost coast. The ecosystem of Caspian, khazri and salty air — what it means for the house and health.
1. Caspian Sea
Caspian is the world's largest lake, salinity 30% of ocean. Absheron shore faces east, depth 10-40 m, summer 24-27 °C, winter 8-12 °C. Currents are seasonal — cleaner in summer, murkier in winter.
2. Khazri and Gilavar winds
Two main winds: khazri (NW, cold, strong) and gilavar (south, warm, dry). Khazri cuts summer heat, is critical in winter. Gilavar in spring and autumn. Around 210 windy days per year.
3. Salty air
The Caspian shore has high NaCl aerosol — three effects: 1) Good for health (asthma, allergic skin disease); 2) Risk for the house — metal rusts in 3 years, wood fades; 3) Plants — only salt-tolerant survive.
4. Five house adaptations
Absheron-adapted: 1) Aluminium windows (not metal); 2) Thermo-wood or WPC (not plain wood); 3) Basalt insulation (against wind); 4) Salt-tolerant plants (olive, tamarisk); 5) HRV (salt filtering).
Absheron ecosystem elements
| Element | Feature | House impact |
|---|---|---|
| Caspian | salt 30%, T° 8-27 | cools, salt aerosol |
| Khazri | 60-90 km/h winter | AC, insulation |
| Gilavar | medium, warm | summer dust |
| Salt aerosol | high NaCl | metal rust, aluminium |
| Sun 2,950-3,100 hr | solar potential | heat, solar panels |
The Absheron ecosystem is harsh but healthy. Winds and salt test the house but benefit health. The house must be adapted to the ecosystem, not built «Baku-style».
Five facts for an Absheron house
- Against salt — avoid metal.
- Against wind — basalt 100 mm+.
- Salt-tolerant plants (olive, tamarisk).
- HRV filters salt.
- For allergics and asthmatics — positive effect.
