How to choose a garden-house pool: concrete, polypropylene, composite

· 6 min read · MARDECO

Pool types

A frame pool goes up over a weekend; a concrete pool takes 3–4 weeks; a composite one, 2 days. Behind these numbers hide three seasons of use vs 30 years vs 25. Here are the real pros, cons and what to look for in a finished house.

Concrete (monolithic)

The Absheron classic. Custom shape and depth, 25–40 years with proper waterproofing. Turnkey 8×4 m: 25,000–40,000 AZN. Downside: 3–4 weeks to build; waterproofing rework every 10–12 years is mandatory.

Polypropylene

A welded prefab basin. Installed in 5–10 days, 15–25 years lifespan, 15,000–28,000 AZN. Plus: simple maintenance, water heats up faster. Minus: limited shapes; wall bowing under sun overexposure.

Composite (fibreglass)

Factory basin delivered whole. Install: 1–3 days. 20–30 years, 22,000–38,000 AZN. Plus: smooth gelcoat, minimal algae, easiest repairs. Minus: large basins often can't fit down Mardakan's narrow streets.

Frame / above-ground

Summer option: 1–2 days, 5–10 years, 800–4,500 AZN. Not a «permanent» pool legally, so no price premium on the house. Good for testing whether you actually want a pool.

What to inspect in a finished house

TypeWhat to look at
ConcreteJoints, edge cracks, external damp stains
PolypropyleneBowed walls, weld seam integrity
CompositeGelcoat scratches, osmotic blisters on floor
FrameLiner (5+ years = replace), frame corrosion
Universal test: ask for the pool passport and switch on the equipment in front of you. Ten minutes of running exposes pump noise and filter leaks.
